The City

Bath was 1st established as a spa resort by the Romans in 43AD, before they withdrew in 410AD. The present Abbey church, founded in 1499, ruined after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539 by order of Henry VIII, was completed in 1611. During the 16th & 17th centuries the wool trade declined, and increasingly Bath came to rely on sick people coming to bathe in the springs. From 1661 Bath water was bottled and sold. Today Bath is a bustling city, popular with tourists and shoppers alike.
