The City

Chester was created by the Romans in about 75AD, when they built a fort there. It became a busy port and a large amphitheatre was built where the
entertainment was provided by gladiators, cock fighting and bear baiting.
In Georgian times Chester was a centre of affluence, as people moved there from the industrial sprawls of Manchester and Liverpool. Today it is a compact city, famous for its history, and surrounded by the most complete walls in Great Britain.
