The Town

Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England. Founded by the Romans, captured by the Danes, and fought over in the Civil War, it became a town renowned for its wool and leather industries. A weekly market, and annual fair have figured for hundreds of years.
Today, it is known as a significant city, rooted in history, embracing a colourful variety of ethnic groups, primarily from south Asia, and is a centre for higher education.

Leicester

Curious About Logo 2Leicester is one of England's oldest cities, well known today for its ethnic diversity, Indian restaurants, football and rugby teams, and a large and vibrant covered market. In yesteryear the Romans built baths, and a castle was constructed. The bones of King Richard were recently discovered, soon to be interred in the city's ancient cathedral. One of the Midlands' hidden gems, Leicester is a city teaming with culture and history.

Clock Tower to Magazine Gateway

From Leicester’s iconic Clock Tower in the heart of the town you head quickly into some of its ancient past. Skirting its medieval cathedral you pass the 14th century Guildhall and then enter the grounds once occupied by Leicester castle. Look down on the Jewry Walls, dating back almost 2,000 years, visit the delightful Castle Gardens, and gaze on the Great Hall of the castle, before ending at one of its mighty gateways (1.5 miles).

Gateway to New Walk Museum

Head back to the city centre again to taste more of Leicester life. Walk through its famous market, the largest covered outdoor market in Europe, where its ethnic diversity can be experienced by all. Onward now to some engaging gardens, with a vibrant fountain before the impressive Town Hall. Finally arrive at the elegance of New Walk, a tree-lined thoroughfare, dating back over 200 years, with a museum at its end
(1.5 miles).
