The City

Liverpool started as a tidal pool next to the Mersey. Its expansion was largely brought about by the city's status as a major port, which was founded by King John in 1207.
Liverpool was made a city in 1880, and by 1901 the population had reached 685,000. By mid 20th century much of the city's traditional industries went into decline. In the 1960's it was the centre of the 'Merseybeat' sound, which became synonymous with The Beatles - and tourism began to flourish!
