Self-guided walks for the Curious...

Explore Scarborough town centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover Scarborough's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Sitting on Yorkshire’s rugged east coast, Scarborough has been a destination of choice for hundreds of years. It has stunning scenery, best seen from the ruins of its ancient castle on top of the cliffs. There are glorious beaches, historic harbours, fishing boats, old galleons, a lighthouse, lobster pots, lifeboats, fish shops, fish and chip shops, seagulls and yachts. There are ancient streets and ancient buildings, funfairs, a sea life centre, a noble Spa dating back over a hundred years, tramways linking cliff tops to the beach, and everywhere the sight, sound and smell of the sea!

Curious About... Scarborough

  • An exploration of Scarborough's town centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the town's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Scarborough in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on a short distance from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the town - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. Castle to Vincent Pier - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
From the castle with its stunning location and panoramic views over the town of Scarborough and the dramatic Yorkshire coastline this walk plunges down past a beautiful church – resting place of Anne Brontë – to Scarborough’s Old Town. Visit a special Market Hall with quirky vaults, dodge the seagulls (if you can!), explore ancient backstreets, check out the funfair, and finish at a spectacular harbour bustling with pleasure boats and colourful fishermen.

2. Grand Hotel to Tramway - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
Start your walk at the Grand hotel - aptly named, overseeing South Bay in an imperious way. From here explore a wooded area with a warren of paths before arriving at a quiet and elegant street in the shape of a crescent. Next plunge into the new town, with a host of compelling, unusual shops, before ending at the top of the Tramway - take a tram down to the seafront and go for a paddle!
1 hourNot Suitable

Each booklet has a page dedicated to the history of the town and 2 pages summarising each walk with suggestions on what to visit along the way. Walk 1 has 21 clues & walk 2 has 14 - both with detailed directions to follow. There are interesting stories about important people, places & events along the way; detailed instructions on how to find a clue if you're stuck; and a comprehensive map with the routes marked on.

"Been to Scarborough loads of times - always to the beach with the kids. Now they've grown up a bit we thought it was time to find out what more the town had to offer, and your walks really hit the spot. We loved the way the walks wound around the town and at each turn there was something new to discover. I don't know how you did it, but it was just right - well done!"

"My family and I have just returned from Whitby and Scarborough and have enjoyed the walks from Curious About. Although my husband and I didn't do the entire length of each walk my children (30, 31 and 32 lol!) did! They really enjoyed finding out the different information in the booklets and filled in the answers as they went round. It was a great way to spend two afternoons in Whitby and Scarborough."
