The Town

Stamford is a Lincolnshire Stone Town, full of old world charm - its
history going back well over 1,000 years. By the 13th century it was
one of the ten largest towns in England. It had a castle, over a dozen churches, four friaries, a
university, and parliaments met there. Today many of these buildings still survive whilst it prospers as a small market town, uniquely encased in splendid English architecture - oozing beauty and fascinating history this is a town not to be missed!

First Walk

Church Walk
Stamford has a large collection of
churches scattered around the town, of
all different denominations and
architectures. This walk takes in a good
cross section of those churches, as well
as highlighting a number of other
fascinating places, like Stamford School
founded in 1532, and Browne’s Hospital,
an ancient almshouse built in the 15th
century
(1 mile).

Heritage Walk
Stamford’s recorded history goes
back well over 1,000 years.
Untouched by the industrial revolution,
much of the town centre was built in the 17th and 18th centuries, in Georgian
or Jacobean style. Because of its conservation status much of the town
still retains its old world
charm, and the Heritage Walk aims
to show you most of it!
