The Towns

Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire, and is famous for
its Hydros, built for various water treatments. Most famous of the twenty or so Hydros which were built, now a County Hall, was the Hydro built by John Smedley, who revolutionised hydrotherapy in
Matlock in the 19th century.
Following the discovery of medicinal springs, Matlock Bath took its name from a bath made
from wood, and lined with lead, which visitors came to use, as well as to drink the waters.
