The City

Winchester was built around 70 AD by the Romans as a regional capital, and became the 5th largest town in Roman Britian.
In the late 9th century the town and region were ruled by Alfred the Great, and in 1079 the Normans built a new cathedral.
In the Middle Ages the main industry was making cloth, until the 15th century, when it went into decline.
The 18th century saw much of Winchester rebuilt, and today it is famous for its cathedral, and beautiful town.
