Self-guided walks for the Curious...

Explore Conwy town centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover Conwy's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Conwy (aka Conway) is a fabulous 13th century North Wales town on the banks of the River Conwy, overlooked by a delightfully complete castle. It also boasts Britain’s smallest house – 10 feet deep, 6 feet wide and 10 feet high. The last person to live there was a 6 feet 3 inch tall fisherman! Surrounding the town are medieval walls which are arguably the most intact anywhere – according to Max Brook's novel Zombies are unable to breach walls, so maybe this is Britain’s most secure town!

Curious About... Conwy

  • An exploration of Conwy's town centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the town's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Conwy in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the town - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. South Conwy to Castle - 1.25 miles / 2 kms
From the south side of ancient Conwy you walk to the foot of the town walls, in the presence of its looming castle. Past a church with beautiful statues, exit the town walls, then return to its historic centre. After catching a glimpse of some delightful gardens you’ll tumble out into a bustling harbour - people, boats, seagulls and sea – what a fantastic scene, before finishing your walk at the foot of the castle.

2. Castle to Conwy Bridge - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
Starting at Conwy’s magnificent castle, you’ll pass its ancient guildhall, before circling a 12th century church, burial place for many a Welsh Prince. Walk down the High Street next, with its character shops and old world buildings. Back now towards the castle before descending to the pretty harbour and a final walk along the river bridge with its stunning views of the castle and the Irish Sea in the distance.

Each booklet has a page dedicated to the history of the town and 2 pages summarising each walk with suggestions on what to visit along the way. Walk 1 has 21 clues & walk 2 has 14 - both with detailed directions to follow. There are interesting stories about important people, places & events along the way; detailed instructions on how to find a clue if you're stuck; and a comprehensive map with the routes marked on.

"We took a couple of hours to do your two walks with the kids - great entertainment, wriggling our way round the streets and alleyways. Our three children loved walking on the walls (we were a bit more nervous!) and we felt we got to know Conwy so much better. Really glad we did it. Thanks!"
