Self-guided walks for the Curious...

Explore the Soho district with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover Soho's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Soho is a square mile of London bordered to the west by Regent Street, Oxford Street to the north, Charing Cross Road to the east and Leicester Square to the south. In the 1950s the music scene flourished with jazz venues such as Ronnie Scott’s. Skiffle groups first started here and the Marquee Club hosted such acts as David Bowie, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Today Soho is a vibrant mix of bars, pubs, restaurants, street food and shops, with colourful characters in what is still a relatively liberal area.

Curious About... Soho

  • An exploration of the Soho district with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the town's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Soho in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the town - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. Oxford Circus to Soho Square - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
From the ever-busy Oxford Circus this walk winds its way round the restless streets of Soho, giving you glimpses of everything that makes it heart beat that bit faster. Pass the famous Liberty’s store into the cool Newburgh Quarter and Carnaby Street, home to modern fashion. Cross a Golden Square before sampling some of Soho’s more colourful and historic streets. End at Soho Square, centre of the ancient French Quarter.

2. Soho Square to Leicester Square - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
Starting at the restful Soho Square Gardens busy with people, this walk threads round streets famous for their restaurants and cosmopolitan flavours. Bend round Cambridge Circus and step into a different world for a while – Chinatown, brilliant colours, sprawling shops and remarkable restaurants. Leave a bit dizzy but find your feet again in Leicester Square, amazed by the street artists plying their trade.

Each booklet has a page dedicated to the history of the town and 2 pages summarising each walk with suggestions on what to visit along the way. Walk 1 has 21 clues & walk 2 has 14 - both with detailed directions to follow. There are interesting stories about important people, places & events along the way; detailed instructions on how to find a clue if you're stuck; and a comprehensive map with the routes marked on.

"I feared Soho might seem a little seedy, but whilst there are some areas I wouldn't want to explore, your walks took us round some fascinating places I never knew existed, and opened our eyes to a really vibrant and exciting area of London - from Carnaby Street at the beginning to Chinatown and Leicester Square at the end. A must-go-and-see for all visitors."
