Self-guided walks for the Curious...

Explore York city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover York's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
York has more miles of intact walls surrounding it than any other city in England. The International Ghost Research Foundation announced in 2002 that York is officially the most haunted city in Europe. York is home to the largest Railway Museum in the world and has the only Japanese Bullet train outside of Japan. Constantine the Great was crowned in York in 306AD, the only Roman emperor to have been crowned anywhere outside of Rome. Lancelot Blackburne, Archbishop of York from 1724 to 1743, served as a pirate in the Caribbean in his younger days.

Curious About... York 2

  • An exploration of York's city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the city's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced York in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the city - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. River and City - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
From the River Ouse this walk takes you along streets with long histories, mingled amongst unusual bars and eateries. Then it’s up onto the City Walls with amazing views across York, before descending to York’s widely admired railway station. Cross the river on another historic bridge, before plunging into the heart of the city, to finish at an historic church nestled next to vibrant bars and splendid views across the river.
1.5 hoursNot Suitable

2. River Ouse to Clifford's Tower - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
Start with modern streets with oodles of history, before traversing a ‘snickelway’ to find a 14th century church. Skirt the fabulous Jorvic Museum and York’s famous Opera House before arriving back at the river, with its vibrant pubs and eateries. Experience historic streets, walk alongside the river again, then up through Gardens to end at the remarkable Clifford’s Tower and the unique Castle Museum.
1 hourOK, small diversion for steps

Each booklet has a page dedicated to the history of the city and 2 pages summarising each walk with suggestions on what to visit along the way. Walk 1 has 21 clues & walk 2 has 14 - both with detailed directions to follow. There are interesting stories about important people, places & events along the way; detailed instructions on how to find a clue if you're stuck; and a comprehensive map with the routes marked on.
