Exeter is an exciting and vibrant city in the beautiful county of Devon, close to the sparkling sea and moody moors. Dating back two millennia there's a castle on a red stone hill, miles of city walls, ruined almshouses, a medieval Guildhall and a stunning cathedral. Mixing modern with ancient there's a church in a shopping mall, quirky shops, and contemporary eateries nestling in an ancient quay. Finally, with elegantly laid out Gardens, a lively Cathedral Green and attractive tree-lined streets, there are plenty of places to rest, savour and play.

Curious About... Exeter

  • An exploration of Exeter's city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the city's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Exeter in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the city - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. Gardens to Cathedral - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
This walk starts at the intriguing Northernhay Gardens - a delight to explore - before probing the charm of Rougemont Gardens with its city walls. Sweeping past Exeter Castle you’ll enter busy and quirky shopping streets, one housing an ancient church, before stumbling across the ruins of bygone almshouses. Next there’s a Roman Way and elegant promenades, before arriving at the splendour of Exeter’s spectacular Cathedral.

2. Cathedral to Quayside - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
Walking beside Cathedral Green will take you back to an earlier, graceful era, before passing an early medieval church, Exeter Cathedral School and a 14th century Bishop’s Palace gateway. Now it’s downhill all the way, past a Baptist Church, city walls, and the Custom House – before the Exeter quayside expands before you – a river and canal with old-world charm, combined with stylish living, eating and drinking!

Each booklet has a page dedicated to the history of the city and 2 pages summarising each walk with suggestions on what to visit along the way. Walk 1 has 21 clues & walk 2 has 14 - both with detailed directions to follow. There are interesting stories about important people, places & events along the way; detailed instructions on how to find a clue if you're stuck; and a comprehensive map with the routes marked on.

"I never knew how much there is to Exeter. We'd seen quite a lot of the centre, but never even knew about the Gardens or the quays. Brilliant day out. Thanks!"
