Self-guided walks for the Curious...

Explore Liverpool city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover Liverpool's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Liverpool has two cathedrals, one situated at each end of Hope Street. The Anglican cathedral is the 5th largest in the world, and has the world’s highest and heaviest bells, and its tower is more than 100 metres high. The cathedral’s Grand Organ is made up of 10,267 pipes, making it the biggest in the UK. Liverpudlians are sometimes called scousers after a type of stew which includes lamb or beef, cabbage, carrot, potatoes and onion. The Philharmonic pub, on Hope Street, is dazzling and flamboyant and is reputedly the most ornate pub in England.

Curious About... Liverpool 2

  • An exploration of Liverpool's city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the city's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Liverpool in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the city - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. Two Cathedrals - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
This route starts at Liverpool's remarkable Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral – ‘a luminous beauty within a conical shape’. From here the route wends its way past university buildings, through streets soaked in history, where Prime Ministers once lived. Pass a pub once frequented by John Lennon, followed by the school once attended by Sir Paul McCartney, before finishing at the truly stunning and immense Anglican Cathedral.

2. Cathedral Circular - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
Starting at the Anglican Cathedral, head along Liverpool's equivalent of Harley Street, where many famous Liverpudlians have lived and worked. Pass the 'bombed-out church' of St Luke's which took a direct hit during the blitz, before tasting some of Liverpool’s older, fashionable shopping streets. Finally enjoy the largest Chinese Arch outside China, before returning to the magnificent Anglican Cathedral - the longest cathedral in the world!

Each booklet has a page dedicated to the history of the city and 2 pages summarising each walk with suggestions on what to visit along the way. There are interesting stories about important people, places & events along the way; detailed instructions on how to find a clue if you're stuck; and a comprehensive map with the routes marked on.

"We tried both Liverpool 1 and 2 and loved them both. The booklets arrived next day, which was great service. We particularly liked the two cathedrals walk, as it was an area of Liverpool we knew nothing about. The clues kept us busy for two or three hours, and afterwards we really enjoyed a coffee in the cathedral! I'd recommend it to anyone - young or old!"
